Landfill Directive
The Landfill Directive is part of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and is helping to bring about a change in the way we dispose of waste in this country. It aims to reduce the pollution potential from landfilled waste that can impact on surface water, groundwater, soil, air and also contribute to climate change. In England and Wales the directive is applied under the Landfill ( England and Wales ) Regulations 2002 and must be fully implemented by July 2009.
There are two new important changes that happened on October 30 2007 . The new requirements are:
One of the simplest ways to pre-treat your non-hazardous waste is to separate your waste and recycle it. By using ECL Recycle Ltd you are fulfilling the pre-treatment requirement.
Duty of Care
When waste is disposed of it may pass through the hands of several people, including: the waste producer, waste carrier, waste disposer and also possibly an agent. Each of the people involved in the transfer of waste has a duty of care when handling the waste to ensure that:
WEEE (Waste of Electronic and Electrical Equipment) Directive
The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive aims to conserve landfill and support more sustainable development by providing an impetus to boost recycling.
Electronic and electrical manufacturers and importers will be most affected by the Directive and will be required to take responsibility for treating and recycling their products when they become waste.
The Directive does not just apply to new products. Producers will be made responsible collectively for goods already on the market.
